  • Date and Time: 3000 years ago, around 9 PM.
  • Setting: In the courtyard of the Pharaoh's temple
  • Weather Conditions: Cool, with barely a breeze

The prominent clack of sandals against stone flooring rang out, echoing throughout the many hallways of the Pharaoh's temple, contrasting the usual sounds of the night. Crickets hummed, mosquitoes along the waters of the Nile buzzed, and the common silence among the city below. High Priest Imhotep, however, did not sleep at this hour. There was something about this trusted chancellor that seemed restless, somewhat insomniac like. But it was hard to sleep when thoughts of Anck-su-namun constantly plagued your mind, as did pondering the consequences of falling in love with her. Imhotep would ensure that their affair would remain hidden in secrecy, such a trusted friend wouldn't even think of getting into such a mess. But he had to have her, she was an addiction, thus traveling through the structure to be together once more.

Turning the corner, the High Priest found himself entering a dimly lit courtyard. The exposed area bathed in direct moonlight, causing the abundant flowers and shrubs to seemingly glitter upon the night rays. He himself held the fire in his hand, his face flickering in the dancing flames before him, causing an albeit ghostly appearance. It would match the scene quite well, actually, for such an unexpected appearance at a late hour could very much so frighten one. The ghoulish Imhotep stepped into the grass for a moment and craned his neck around, enjoying the beauty of dusk and courtyard. The moonlight was directed upon his figure, now, and he closed his eyes momentarily. His lips curled into a slight smirk, though closed.

It was most likely best for him if Imhotep continued his voyage to Anck-su-namun's quarters as to not arouse any attention to his traitorous intentions. Opening his dark eyes, the High Priest felt almost regenerated, one could say. It was as if he could see Anck-su-namun right before him, waiting patiently for him. Taking a confident breath, he began to resume his journey. He moved swiftly through the courtyard, his sandals no longer a noisy nuisance as they stepped onto the silent blades of grass beneath him. Ah, it was such a beautiful, inconspicuous night. All was quiet, and assuming that most were asleep (which he was very wrong) he concluded that this would be an easy night without any interruptions. Imhotep was eager to reunite with his secret mistress, so blinded by their love that he did not realize there was another presence, and close at that.

It was not her place to be out at this time. The great Princess would have her head if she knew, but sick with worry Maheret could not sleep. She well knew what could happen to her, unprotected, this late at night in the open courtyard. There were plenty of stories to warn her and other presumptious ladies of the court who lived in the grandure of the palace from going out at the darkest hours of night. Maheret knew them all by heart because she often told them to the younger ladies to scare them knowing both that it was her duty and that sone of the tales of misfortune she told were absolutely true. After all, they were just ladies in the court. The men who attacked were often far greater than themselves and therefore could not be held in contempt no matter how the Princess tried to give them the blame they so richly deserved.

Even the thought of her name being smeared with dishonor was not enough to keep Maheret out of the night air. Her worries needed to be soothed and the rich calming incense of the royal courters had not helped. She knew that only the natural night air could cool her body from its fevered state and calm her mind with its beauty. There were few things, after all, that could match the beauty of the courtyard at night. Many a restless night she had personally escorted the Princess there so that she could think and calm her mind. It never ceased to astound Maheret the spendour and privilage that they were accustomed to here at the palace. She had been brought up in it as she had never been of a low rank herself, but the sheer blessing of the beauty here had always astounded her as it continued to do this night.

The skies this night were clear, and the breeze soothing against her skin. The air carried a slight perfume about it, probably carried from one chamber or hall or another as the scents of the palace were often kept fresh by the use of the various incenses. For a moment, Maheret debated about crossing to the pool that was channeled from the nile so that she could perhaps dip her feel in the cool water. That was always calming, and with tensions around the Princess higher than usual with the battle for the privilage of gaurding her father soon approaching, well, Maheret needed all the calm she could get.

The sound of a person coming was, however, not her idea of calm. The stories of the abuses of various women about the palace late at night immediately rushed to her head and Maheret listened quickly to judge where the footsteps were coming from and then ran in the opposite direction and hid behind a pillar. What she saw however, was no mere lower lord or servant. What she saw was unexpected and shocking. She saw the high priest. Imhotep himself was out at this strange hour. He had no reason to be did he? The king had been asleep for hours, so had most of the household. There were no matters of concern to be debated before a council of priests, no one was seriously ill to be prayed for directly or she would be present as a representitive for the Princess. So what was the high priest doing out?

He seemed blissfull. Despite her horrid hiding place she was not noticed. And there was such a strange look on his face; one of pleasure, of anticipation. He was walking away from his quarters and that of the king's where he often roamed and toward the women's section. She would have been alerted by one of his assistants if he meant to meet with Nefertiri? But who else would he have buisness with on this side of the palace?

With all the care in the world, Maheret did as any lady with protection of a princess and a desire for information would do and followed the high priest. She passed through the night silently and carefully, but there was little need as the man was so blinded by his goal his senses seemed to be dulled. It seemed he was on a path, and an important one at that to the rooms of the favored mistress of Pharoah Seti. It could not be with good intent either. She would have heard a messanger running through the courtyard to proceed him. She would have known if there was something wrong with her. But there was not. This was just all too sinister. But she would have to wait to confirm her suspiciouns. Hidden by the dark of the night, Maheret did so knowing quiet and patience might yeild her the boon of wisdom.

As Imhotep drew closer to the ending of the courtyard, surrounded by hallways on either side, he removed the rather noisy sandals from his feet to allow silence among the stone. He'd perhaps already caused enough clatter, but he believed it was not enough to wake anyone important. And with the Pharaoh's guards just around the corner, he'd have to play his cards right. Sly and inconspicuous, one of his many personalities that the High Priest was quite skilled at. And besides, the guards had naught the authority to question Imhotep's actions, or even feel any suspicion at that. However, since their affair began, it was uncommon for him to wander around this division of the temple.

Despite Imhotep's loyal and obedient persona, there was also the other, deceitful and cunning face. Which, indeed, had formed a scheme to smother any apprehension of watchful Medjai. There had been a recent death within the King's temple, no doubt a low life servant, but even so, as the High Priest, it was his job to prepare the souls and ferry them. Through the previous days, he'd been extremely busy. His schedule consisted of an important assembly between his councils of priests, debates of structures still to be built around Lower Egypt, and what to do with the spirits who had yet to travel into the Underworld of afterlife. This chancellor and High Priest was no ordinary high-rank, he was not the type to strut around with his head held high and sit around bossing at others like the rest, he was the real deal. This also worked to his advantage.

Abruptly halting at the intersection of hallways before him, Imhotep held out his torch. The embers from the fire danced and swirled, casting shadows upon the stone walls and temporarily lighting them up. His coal black eyes glanced either way into the dimly lit passageways to ensure there were no pests of witnesses who could possibly snitch. Unbeknowst to him, however, there was a witness who would eventually view the forbidden though fateful love. But Imhotep did something quite unexpected. Instead of heading directly to the left corridor that led to Anck-su-namun's quarters, he instead turned into the right, and before him stood his priests, though unseen by anyone. His hand wiggled to offer an order to the guards, and quietly, one by one they filed into a line and disappeared back from whence they came.

The High Priest spun on his heel and swiftly moved back into the intersection of aisles that forked. He briskly walked into the left corridor that seemed unoccupied, though a trail of torches set onto the walls so one could successfully make it through the tunnel. Before he rounded yet another corner, his hands clapped together into a formal priestly movement, as if praying. Greeted by the many flames hung on stones beside him, Imhotep gracefully walked, somewhat slowly and respectful as he began to pass the King's quarters, Medjai watching carefully. His black gaze flickered over to the guards, where as he nodded once in acknowledgement, and they too returned the favor.

This time, Imhotep turned to the right slightly. A few feet before him, golden entry curtains welcomed him. Setting the torch onto an empty container sitting on the wall next to him, his lips slightly curled into a small, content smile. From down the hall, unseen by Medjai, his faithful priests followed behind, ordered to keep watch. He took a deep breath.

He eagerly drew the curtain aside.

Years in the palace had done their work on Maheret. She had seen and heard every story of the ancient art of deciet and learned many times over the reasons why this highest of crimes against the Gods would be committed by any soul no matter how fearing of the concenquences if the price was right. The price to committe such attrocities was different for every man and woman in the world. She assumed that perhaps some it was the same, but no matter the cause, the marks of betrayal were all the same...and the Lord Imhotep, the honored high priest, the trusted high priest, the great high priest, bore all of the marks that would prove him to be everything against all believed him to be: a traitor of the Gods and their represetitive on earth.

The very idea was treason of course. To even think such a thing, much less investigate it was to ask for death. Not just death but if caught by the high priest or his men condemnation in the afterlife no doubt for discovering his most private of ambitions...whatever it was. Maheret was sure it was no good. Anything that involved passing through the night with such purpose and secrecy could not be filled with any pure intent in her opinion. She should know after all. She was the one hiding behind pillars and holding her breath in order to spy on this most unnatural of priests.
